UNAVAILABLE IN 2025/26

Woodlands Stud is saddened to announce that What The Hill will not be returning to New Zealand. Despite support in his first few years at stud, the 2024/25 breeding season resulted in only 37 mares served in NZ and 10 in Australia. He was the leading sire of 4YO, and the second leading sire of both 2 & 3YO’s in the spring of 2024.

The standout among What the Hill’s progeny to date is superstar Bet N WIN with 14 wins and $431,209 earned so far, including multiple Group 1 victories. He is the current joint favourite for this year’s Interdominion trotting final in July.

His pedigree combines two of the best trotting sires in Australasia being a champion son of the great Muscle Hill and out of a full-sister to top trotting sire Majestic Son.

On the race track, What The Hill was a star. As one of the fastest sons of Muscle Hill he took a career equaling record of 1.51.4 at his last start and accumulated $1,345,999 in stakes. His racetrack accomplishments included:

  • As a 2YO he took a 1.54.4 mark and banked $335,397. He won the prestigious Peter Haughton Memorial and the final of the New Jersey Sires Stakes.

  • At 3, he banked $1,010,602 in purses and was the clear stand out trotter of his year. He won the $684,000 Canadian Trotting Classic in a Stakes record 1:51.4, he won his elimination and final of the Breeders Crown and he defeated the open class trotters in the final of the TVG, defeating 2015 Trotter of The Year Pinkman ($2,791,114) and Crazy Wow ($2,269,135), this was his career equaling best time - 1.51.4!

  • He also won the $1 million Hambletonian in 1.52.3 before getting disqualified for apparent interference up the straight.

His maternal family includes millionaire and top sire Majestic Son, Ramerizi a $430,000 earner who was older trotting mare of her year, Mistreizi who won over $570,000 and was a World champion and Double L Lindy who was a 1.53 winner that earned over $250,000.

CROSSES OF GOLD

There are only a couple of lines that can’t be crossed with What The Hill, and already we are seeing a few patterns in the crosses that are being bred from him and also with the help of some of the successful crosses that are working well with Muscle Hill.

LOVE YOU – Two of his Australian Group 1 winners have been bred on this cross and there looks to be some other nice ones emerging from this cross in Australasia. He is a great option for not only Love You mares but any European lines.

ARNDON - Already we have seen many mares by SUNDON being crossed with What The Hill, a large portion of our trotting mares are by Sundon so it is great that they can be crossed with What The Hill. Mares by DREAM VACATION are also from this line and can cross well with What The Hill.

PEGASUS SPUR - A cross that is already proving successful with Muscle Hill is the Pegasus Spur line. In America mares from the SJ’S PHOTO line has been popular with both What The Hill and Muscle Hill.

MONARCHY – A cross that has already left a Group 1 performer with Inasinglemoment as well as a handful of other nice winners, this cross looks to be one that is set to be one of the strongest with What The Hill.

OTHERS - It is still early days but we are starting to see some trends develop with ANDOVER HALL, ARMBRO INVASION and CONTINENTALMAN mares which have also been popular crosses. While it is a close cross, some MAJESTIC SON mares have also been crossed with him with success.
